Movie Review of "Oliver Twist"
Rated PG-13

By CK Movie Kid Jonathan Lack

Oliver TwistWe all know the story of Oliver Twist. We've either seen the musical, a stage production, a made-for-TV movie, read Charles Dickens original book, or something else. I've only seen a few versions of it; I'm not entirely familiar with the story. That may be why this movie was so powerful to me. But my opinion is, it doesn't matter how many times you've heard or seen this story, the new "Oliver Twist" sends its message to the audience in such a strong way that you can't get the movie out of your head.

For those not familiar with the story, Oliver Twist is an orphan, raised to be very polite. He is sent to work for some men with many other boys. One day, he asks for some more food after lunch. He is sold off, and a series of events takes him the seventy miles to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a pickpocket his age. Oliver goes with him and meets an old man by the names of Fagin (portrayed brilliantly by Ben Kingsly) who is the head of a group of young thieves. Oliver is thrust into a new world, full of difficult choices, but he stays steadfast and loyal to the people who have shown him kindness all the same.

I don't usually mention acting in my reviews, but I must comment on Ben Kingsly's portrayal of Fagin. He did an outstanding job of acting, some of the best acting we've seen this year. See the movie for this, if nothing else. But this was not the only good acting in the film. Everyone did a very good job on their parts, all bringing Oliver's world to life.

Another thing that brought the film to life was the score. The score was brilliant, and without it, the movie wouldn't have been as good as it was.

I recommend this movie to ages 12 or 13 and up. It was rated PG-13 for disturbing images. These include some graphic images, disturbing sequences, and intense plot points. It's not for the younger kids.

So head to theater and see "Oliver Twist!" (October, 2005)
