"Is it bad form to drink a Diet Squirt at 9 in the morning? Well, I don't know and I don't care. Because nothing I do could be in as bad form as what Dave did last night. I haven't even slept. Well, except from 4 to 8. I can't believe I'm about to write this down. Dave actually broke up with me. Broke up with me!" This is the first of many diary entries Courtney Von Dragen Smith writes in the book, Truth or Dairy.

Truth or Dairy is Courtney's journal that begins in August when her boyfriend, Dave breaks up with her. Courtney must now face her senior year in high school without a boyfriend. She becomes angry and humiliated at the fact that he broke up with her just because he's going off to college. She now vows to get through the year boyfriend-free. But will she? Will her position in student government change things? Or will a meeting with a certain someone shift her views on a boy-free life?

I really enjoyed this book because it is set in Colorado. There are many mentions of places that I am familiar with. Two examples are Park Meadows mall and University of Colorado at Boulder. I also liked the book because it could very easily be a true story. It could happen to anyone. The only down -side to this book is that it has a few swear words in it. I would rate this book as a PG to PG-13 book.

Because of that rating, I would recommend the book to sixth grade girls and older. A series of books that are similar to this one, but on a less mature level are the Amelia's Notebook series by Marissa Moss. These books also have the diary format and the dealings of real life. If you like humorous books dealing with real life, I suggest you read this book. (October, 2000)
