Although I'd never seen the original "Bewitched" series from the
60's, I was eager to review this movie. And the movie didn't let me down.
"Bewitched," starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, is a hilarious
movie that, as far as I could tell, was a lot like the original series.
Jack Wyatt, a former big star, hasn't had a job for over a year. Now, his next opportunity is a remake of the sitcom Bewitched. However, his over-inflated ego makes him want the show to be focused only on his character, Darren, so he wants an unknown in the role of Samantha. Easier said then done.
Jack runs into a woman named Isabel Bigelow, who seems to be perfect for the role. But no one knows just how perfect she really is. Isabel is a real witch, who's given up on magic. She takes the part, but after a few days of shooting realizes that she doesn't have a part. She snaps and gives up her goal of not being a witch to extract her revenge on Jack. But revenge isn't always just cruel -- it's hilarious.
This movie is one of those movies that is better understood is you've seen the original show. I hadn't seen the show when I saw the movie, but I had taken the time to learn who the characters were. But now, I plan to watch some of the old episodes.
I also thought it was cool when they put in some of the original "Bewitched" characters in for parts. Most of all, the sequence with Uncle Arthur near the end. That's very funny.
I would recommend this to ages 9 or ten and up. It was rated PG-13, but it was just a little bit across the line that separates PG and PG-13. It had some language, and brief drug references.
So fly to the theater and see "Bewitched." (June, 2005)
